Technology, Truth, and Common Sense

Category: Quick Thoughts

  • Random thoughts about YouTube

I hate media today. “You won’t believe THIS!” “5 tricks Airlines hope you NEVER LEARN!” “13 stupid mistakes DESTROYING your automatic car!” “NO ONE can explain THIS!” </eye roll> What’s with all this sensationalist title nonsense? And with these horrendous thumbnails every video now has? Has anyone actually looked at YouTube lately? It’s disgusting. I…

  • Nintendo

You’re out. Goodbye. You will NEVER get another dollar from me. I bought it, it’s mine. :-* Nintendo updated its Nintendo Account Agreement with a severe warning against “unauthorized use”, in a bid to prevent emulation and piracy. The US update is as follows: “Without limitation, you agree that you may not (a) publish, copy,…

  • Cleaning Arch Linux

Chris Titus wrote an article (and did a video!) about cleaning Arch Linux. I wanted to add a bit more that I find helpful – something that he didn’t cover: Uninstalling UNUSED dependencies! He covered cleaning the pacman cache, pruning timeshifts, checking usage and several other things, but not removing orphaned dependencies. Here’s a great…

  • Nico the Napping

This cat is the most adorable creature in the world…

  • Upgrading from AMD Ryzen 9 7950x to 9950X3D

The patient, as viewed under the operating room lights… If you’re interested in my old CPU, it’s for sale here: https://columbus.craigslist.org/sop/d/columbus-amd-ryzen-processor/7834796843.html

  • 100 gigabit to the Desktop

Truly overkill for ANY purpose. But still fun as hell. 😀

  • Cameron’s American Bistro: Credit Card Required for Restaurant Reservations – NO THANK YOU!

I wanted to book a reservation at one of my favorite restaurants (well, it USED TO BE a favorite, not anymore!) until I saw this nonsense: I don’t know if this is some new thing from OpenTable or if Cameron‘s is just having issues with people not showing, I don’t care. Regardless, I will never…

  • UniTel Website Insecurity

Just got off the phone with Lexi at UniTel who was absolutely unbothered by the fact I was able to log in to someone else’s account. It turns out if you visit https://www.unitelcustomer.com/process-password-recovery-token.php and click Submit, you’re able to reset another user’s password without entering anything! I was able to not only log in, but…

  • qemu 9.1.1-1 / virt-manager Audio Shenanigans

The upgrade of qemu packages from 9.1.0-2 to 9.1.1-1 broke the audio output of my Windoze 11 VM that I typically work from. Arch Linux is a rolling release, so it’s not as easy to just specify the version of a package you want to install using any of the normal commands with Pacman –…

  • WTF Google

It’s no secret that I’ve fallen out of love and into a constant state of disgust with “Big Tech.” Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon… they all do repulsively shady things that make me want to swear off tech, sell every gadget I own, and become some kind of Amish hipster. Okay, okay, that might be a…
